Happy Wednesday… or should I say Happy Workout Wednesday! Fitness isn’t really something that I have covered much here on FoF before, but with 2017 quickly coming to a close, lately I have been thinking quite a bit about some of my goals & resolutions for 2018. While I have many things I would like to work on in the new year, fitness is definitely at the top of my list. Besides running (read more on my running journey here) and taking Pure Barre classes for a few months during the summer, I haven’t really had a fitness routine that I have stuck to in quite a while. This year I ran in the Cap10K race, but I will be 100% honest with you all – it was hard. I trained the best I could for it, but still didn’t feel totally prepared and in the end I just kept feeling like I could have done better.
I recently signed up for the Cap10K again next year (something about this race I just love! It really pushes me to be more active), and while I just started my training a few weeks ago, running has still been pretty tough for me and I have been trying to brainstorm exactly how I am going to cross-train for this race so that I can become stronger & reduce risk of injury. Not only did I want to find a supplemental workout to my running that would improve my muscles, but I won’t lie – I want to get fit! I’ve been fortunate to have a pretty fast metabolism my whole life (aka I could eat whatever I wanted and do minimal exercise and not have to worry about it), but as I’m getting older I can tell that it is starting to slow down. I know that I don’t eat the healthiest (give me all of the pasta & dessert, please!) – which is another one of my new year’s resolutions – but I can tell that I am starting to get soft in a few areas that I want to tone up! So when I saw this photo that one of my favorite bloggers posted recently and then read about her fitness journey here, I decided there is no time like the present to start my own fitness journey and to start the BBG program. Why wait until the new year?!
So what is BBG exactly?! The program stands for Bikini Body Guide, and is an at-home workout program developed by Kayla Istines. The program is built around 28-minute workouts three days a week; each workout focuses on a different muscle group (abs/arms, legs, and full body) so you get a very well-rounded workout each week. Each 28-minute workout consists of two 7-minute circuits that you complete twice with a 1-minute break in between. You are given 4 different moves to complete as many times as you can in each circuit (think: push-ups, planks, burpees, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, weighted squats, etc) – the combination of weight training and cardio makes the program incredibly effective (thanks to this website for helping explain it!). On the days that you don’t do the BBG workout, you are expected to do LISS (Low Intensity Steady State cardio, which is the opposite of HIIT/High Intensity Interval Training), which for me means running on those days.
My favorite thing about this workout plan is that it can easily be done at home – it just requires about 30 minutes and very little equipment (you will need things like a yoga mat, some weights, a jump rope, etc). I downloaded the BBG app (it’s called SWEAT) and it makes it so easy! It walks you through every single move and makes it so easy to understand (you can see from the photo above!). There is even a calendar on it that allows you to plan out your workouts for the week, your LISS days, and your rest day. So far I have completed two workouts in my first week of BBG and they are no joke! I have been sore every day which to me means that I am working new muscles and strengthening the muscles I already had.
I think BBG it is going to be the perfect compliment to running and will only make running that much easier and enjoyable for me! And of course I can’t wait to see what kind of results I will earn by utilizing this program. While weight loss isn’t the #1 reason I am implementing this program into my lifestyle, I look forward to having my own “before” and “after” photos in 12 weeks from now to share with you all! Which I will share… once I have results, lol. I also plan on doing “check in” posts here on FoF every 4 weeks or so to let you all know my thoughts on the program! I am so excited to start this journey and can’t wait to grow stronger each and every day through it.
Have you ever tried BBG?!
Thanks for stopping by!
