With Drew and I heading to California for a road trip tomorrow (!!!), today I thought I would share my secret weapon for packing jewelry for when I travel! I travel to Austin about once a month so I am constantly packing up all of my baubles and to be honest, it has taken me quite a while to find a system that works for me so that things don’t get tangled, lost, or damaged. Most travel jewelry organizers are so expensive and they actually take up quite a bit of space. I got this Travel Jewelry Organizer from Container Store (only $29.99) a couple of months ago and it has been a total travel game-changer.
This organizer is such a perfect, compact size – it easily fits in my suitcase but is also small enough that it could fit in my handbag if needed. My second favorite thing is all. of. these. compartments. An organizer’s dream come true! I tend to wear earrings more than anything, so I designated 6 of the compartments to earrings, 1 to necklaces, and 3 to bracelets including the larger compartment on the bottom left that can hold larger pieces like bangles.
At the bottom of the organizer are two long, thin pieces that snap in – perfect for holding rings. The 3 compartments in the middle of the organizer also slide onto these pieces, and those compartments are removable which is such a nice convenience.
I love the benefit of having these 3 removable compartments – it allows you to use them individually (ie: if you wanted to toss one in your handbag or clutch – I tend to do this if I’m wearing big/heavy earrings that I know i won’t want to keep on for a long period of time. I just throw a back-up pair in one of these pouches to keep in my handbag so I can switch my earrings nice & easily) and it also gives you the option of making more space inside the organizer if you need (ie: for cuffs, watches, larger necklaces, etc.).
When I was shopping at the Container Store for this organizer, the sales lady tried to get me to purchase these fancy earring holders (available for sale at the bottom of that page, but you can also see what they look like here). Um, $5.99 for 6 earring holders?! Thanks, but no thanks. I went to my local Hobby Lobby, got a piece of thick artist board (thicker than a poster board but thinner than a foam board), cut it into small rectangles, poked a few holes, and voila! My own, DIY earring holders. I made enough so that all of my earrings had one (which was about 30 pairs & the board only cost about $5… so take that, Container Store!) and I actually keep my earrings on these little holders now all the time (not just when I’m traveling). It helps to keep everything together, makes finding your earrings so much easier, and I think it helps for things to not get as tangled/disheveled.
Here you can see how the side pieces fold over each other to tuck into the organizer for when you’re ready to zip it closed.
